Seasonal Guide

High-Water vs Low-Water Season

What the falls look like month by month — and how it changes your group itinerary.

What is the best time of year to visit Victoria Falls with a group?

June to August is the strongest all-round window: the falls still run full from the high-water peak, days are dry and cool for walking, and wildlife concentrates near the Zambezi. Choose February to May if the group wants the thundering full curtain and spray, and September to December if the priority is Devil's Pool, white-water rafting and unobstructed photographs of the gorge.

Victoria Falls in full flood during high-water season

February – May

High-Water Season

  • Peak flow in April; spray visible from kilometres away
  • Guaranteed rainbows and dramatic photographs
  • Raincoats needed; viewpoints can be misted over
  • Devil's Pool closed; rafting limited to lower gorges
  • Helicopter flights are the best way to see the full curtain
Victoria Falls in low-water season with exposed basalt cliffs

September – December

Low-Water Season

  • Clear views of the 108m basalt cliff face and gorges
  • Devil's Pool and Livingstone Island swims open
  • Full-day white-water rafting through rapids 1–19
  • Hot, dry days; excellent wildlife around waterholes
  • Zimbabwean side retains flow when Zambia thins out
